This year I decided to extend my learning in the coaching space and undertake a program to become a Certified Master Coach. As well as successfully completing the program this month, I was honoured to speak on behalf of my fellow master coach graduates at the convocation in Kuala Lumpur last weekend.

Here is a little of what I shared in my speech:

I started my coaching journey over a decade ago. Having discovered coaching quite by chance, as I never had the opportunity to work with a coach during my own corporate leadership career.

And what I have come to learn throughout these years of becoming a coach, is that being a coach is more than a job.

Being a coach is more than a career.

Being a coach is a calling.

A calling to make a difference. A calling to contribute. A calling to change the world …. One conversation at a time.

I have worked with hundreds of coaching leaders and professional coaches, and what I have observed is that in all the good and great coaches, there are three attributes that are always present.

The first of these is self-awareness. Coaches have a much higher level of self-awareness than the average person.

The second is continuous learning. Coaches are for me some of the most active learners I’ve ever encountered.

And the third essential attribute that I notice in these great coaches is a genuine desire to be of service to others.

I started this CMC program journey two years ago. One of the things that was most important to me was to do my coach training outside Australia. To broaden my own perspective with approaches that were perhaps different to those I’d learned before.

When you do a lot of learning, the more learning you do, the more you realise there is to learn.

And the more you know, the more you realise you do not know.

It was the same with undertaking this certified master coach program.

What I have found is that in going through this process, from the decision to undertake the program, to starting the program, to undertaking the learning to doing the practice, to completing the exams, is that I have needed to lean on those three key attributes I mentioned earlier.

Self-awareness, the willingness to hold the mirror up, to have the courage to see what is there, what is not there, what needs to change, what needs to improve in yourself. And there’s been quite a bit of that. Believe me.

The second attribute is the learning. Doing the practice. Continuing to grow and develop. I underestimated the level of focus and effort that I would need to complete this program. Yet it was important to me, so I created the time and space I needed.

The third attribute is the genuine desire to be in service to others. This is the thing that really allowed me to stay the course… even when in the messy middle.

To know that in completing this program, in elevating my practice of coaching and my being of coaching, I would be able to offer even more to my clients, to the people I work with.

Being a coach is a calling. And I am called to more.

I’d love to know your thoughts.
