17 Jul CEOs, HERE ARE 20 BENEFITS OF COACHING YOUR PEOPLE

“I’ve never coached a conversation in my life.”
That was Bill’s comment at lunchtime on the first day of the Certificate IV & Diploma in Workplace and Business Coaching, 12-month program.
Bill was a very successful, and now retired, CEO for large corporate organisations. He was setting up his new coaching business, and he wanted to get qualifications in coaching to provide some credibility for this next evolution of his career. He thought this would just be a tick in the box exercise because he had been coaching during his whole leadership career.
What he got instead was a revelation.
All those years he thought he had been having coaching conversations; it turned out he had been mentoring people.
This is not uncommon. Only about 30% of the people who believe they are using a coaching approach are coaching. Most are using a combination of mentoring, consulting and micromanaging. And these 30% do not take advantage of anywhere close to all the potential opportunities to coach in the workplace.

With this new insight, as well as beginning to develop his coaching understanding and skills, Bill began to realise how different his leadership might have been if he had used both mentoring and coaching. Â
Instead, he missed out. And so did his people.Â
Here are some of the everyday benefits of adopting a leadership coaching approach:Â
Â
- Draws out other people’s ideasÂ
- Encourages independent thinkingÂ
- Means you don’t need to know the answer to everythingÂ
- Let others’ use their initiativeÂ
- Gives access to other peoples’ expertiseÂ
- Offers effective feedback opportunitiesÂ
- Fosters collaborationÂ
- Shows trust in your peopleÂ
- Helps people use their strengthsÂ
- Raises performanceÂ
- Offers opportunities to acknowledge, celebrate and value the people around youÂ
- Is a great way to solve problemsÂ
- Allows you to facilitate conflict situations constructivelyÂ
- Supports and elevates brainstormingÂ
- Develops accountability in othersÂ
- Helps people learn every dayÂ
- Means you can let go of being the expertÂ
- Can make meetings focused and effectiveÂ
- Encourages innovationÂ
- Demonstrates your belief in your peopleÂ
And more …Â
While Bill had clearly been a very positive and valuable influence on the life and career of the people around him, had been a very successful and effective CEO, he recognised it could have been even better. That he would have scaled the impact even further with a coaching approach.

The further into the coaching program he progressed, the more he realised there is so much opportunity for using a coaching approach in leadership that is completely missed by most leaders, and in most organisations.
Which is good news for you, because the opportunity is in front of you.
CEOs can make a bigger difference, a bigger impact, have more influence, increase accountability and capability in everyday conversations by integrating a coaching approach in their leadership. And ensuring they build this capability in all the leaders in their organisations to do the same.
So why aren’t you coaching yet?
I’d love to know your thoughts.
