How To Get The Negative Nellies Above the Line

Hi. Stacey Ashley here from ashleycoaching.com.au.

Today, I’ve got three quick tips to help you get those “Negative Nellies” in your team above the line.

A lot of my clients ask me, “What do I do with that person in my team who, no matter how hard I try, they’re just not motivated.” They just don’t really seem to be positive. Maybe they’re even really negative.

Most recently, it came up in my How to Fast Track Your Leadership Webinar. This is something that I hear all the time. One of the things that I think is really important is to remember that, as the leader, you can’t actually motivate someone. Each person has to motivate themselves. What you can do, though, is to create the opportunity, the environment in which they can become motivated.

Let’s talk about some of the things that you can try. If reframing hasn’t worked for you, that little jolt, that little interrupt to the mindset, then think about these three things.

  1. Firstly, help that person who’s a little bit negative to understand what the consequences are of staying below the line. What’s the pain? What’s the risk? Let’s be honest. We’re all creatures of self-interest. If it impacts on me, I might choose to do something differently.
  2. The second thing is to help them to recognize what the potential benefits are: the upsides for them of moving above the line and getting into that resourceful space; rather than continuing to be negative.
  3. The third thing is to really get them to check in for themselves about what’s important to them. Helping them to recognize how what’s important to them, might relate to what’s actually going on in their work and how they’re performing at the moment.
