With the state of the world as it is, one of the most critical opportunities for every CEO, and I would say crucial to their success, is to build trust.

We continue to see an erosion of trust around the world. As just one example, the 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer shows that almost seven in 10 people fear institutional leaders are deliberately misleading the public. People are losing trust rapidly.

Consequently, they are narrowing their inner circle of trust to those who are closest to them. Trust is becoming localised. If I do not know you, or you have different views, perspectives, priorities than I do, I am far less likely to trust you than even a decade ago.

You know that trust is critical in our workspaces and our organisations. It is a fundamental element of creating connection and the opportunity to work alongside each other, to collaborate, to support each other, to be human with each other. Without trust, we lose so much.

Support, opportunity, possibility, engagement, productivity, achievement, shared progress, joy. Without these things, organisations are not a great place to be and the people in them are unlikely to perform at their best. This does not lead to great outcomes for people, teams or organisations.

The good news though is that CEOs can create a bridge. For two out of three people CEOs are still part of this narrowing circle of trust. CEOs have an enormous opportunity to strengthen trust right now. To be a visible leader.

Think about the importance of this. As trust declines inside our organisations, silos often rise. Collaboration across teams decreases. Conflict, because our values and agendas are not aligned, rises, and so much more energy is put into our differences rather than our commonality.

If you want your organisation and the people in it to be thriving in a challenging world context, I strongly encourage you to consider how you can raise the level of trust.

What are the things you personally can do and role model for other leaders in your organisation?

  • How can you be visible in your leadership?
  • How can you be transparent in your messaging and consistent?
  • How can you bring people into the conversations happening in your organisation?
  • How can you invite input and contribution, inclusivity, and care and support?
  • How can you offer human leadership.

In these troubling times, leaders have a unique and important role in creating safety and trust in our organisations. CEOs have a critical role in bridging the trust gap.

I’d love to know your thoughts.
