HOW TO FOSTER YOUR OWN CREATIVITY

Good morning it’s Stacey Ashley here.

And I’ve just finished Recording, or composing, my notes for a luncheon I’m attending tomorrow. CEO Forum luncheon.

And I just thought, you know what, I need to just talk a little bit about creating opportunity for creativity to take place.

I’ve had a few conversations about this in recent days (as you can see I’m trying to power on as I record this) a few conversations that have been about, you know, the lack of opportunity for many senior leaders to have thinking space, and to think strategically, to be creative, to have the idea generation.

And I think it’s worth talking about because that’s such a fundamental part of a senior leader’s role, is to be able to develop ideas, to create a vision that’s in line with purpose for the team or the organisation. And if you are not being deliberate about offering yourself, creating yourself, the opportunities, the space and time, to do that then you’re neglecting part of your key responsibility.

So here’s a few ideas for you.

1.   One, is obviously, get outside. Even if it’s just to walk between meetings, make sure that you’ve got some outside time.

2.   Also, that you don’t book your calendar solid. That you actually need to leave some space for you to have downtime that’s not about meetings or being with a whole big other group of people. So really allowing yourself the opportunity to just have some space so you can reflect, so can ponder, so you can think.

3.   And also so you can absorb information. I was reading an article just a couple days ago about the importance of giving your brain a rest so that you can absorb information, the content that you’ve already consumed.

So my message is be deliberate about creating space to foster and nurture your own creativity.

And I’m going to continue doing that for myself. Have a great day.

p.s the other one is so obvious I forgot to mention it….get some exercise!
