Stacey Ashley here and I’m at Moree Regional Airport. I’m just waiting for my flight home to Sydney. I’ve been here for 24 hours and I’ve been working with one of my favourite clients who is a cotton farming organisation.

So they have three big cotton farms, plus a cotton gin. And I work with their leadership team. It’s really quite remarkable because they’re putting so much focus into creating future, and a succession plan and all of the things that we aspire to do in our organisations.

But what really struck me today was that the crux of a lot of our conversations came down to those very human things. And this is really interesting because clearly these people are experts in their areas. They’ve all got, you know, engineering and agricultural and you know, incredible expertise. But the challenges, the opportunities all lie with people.

How do we create better relationships?

How do we improve communication, collaboration, the opportunity for people to step up, to take more accountability and responsibility?

How do we empower our people so that they can take ownership of more things and actually follow them through?

Not just the routine stuff but some of the bigger projects that are about setting up the future. And I think this is really interesting because it’s so similar to all of my corporate clients and my occasional government clients and so on.

The human factors are the things that make the difference between just getting by and creating your future. It’s the difference between you know, having people do the bare minimum and them being really involved and really invested and part of creating the future of the organisation.

And so I thought I would just sort of share that because as you know, for me it’s a really important time in leadership at the moment. Well, not just for me but for the whole world. It’s a really important time in leadership at the moment and something that I’m focused on.

How do we make sure that we are creating the opportunity, opportunity for even more leaders, to show up and do great work and become even better. Leading self, leading teams, leading programmes of work and projects, and thinking and you know, setting up for a future that we want to be part of.

And so I just really wanted to share those thoughts, and to ask you this question, which is what are you doing that’s about deliberately creating opportunities to bring humanity into leadership? To bring humanness into your workplace, into your teams, into your organisation, into your thinking, into your planning, for today and for the future.

Because that’s really where the magic happens. The connection, the collaboration, the opportunity to create the future.
