Last week we finished launching Confluence and basked in the celebration of becoming an Amazon bestseller for book number seven. Following this though, I found it very hard to focus on anything substantial.

Of course I continued to support clients, keep up with admin, and work on things that did not require too much intensive brainpower, but I really just could not get my headspace into doing another significant piece of thinking.

I gave myself permission to not write a newsletter last week.

Well, that brings me to this week. I was still struggling to write a newsletter. I have been flitting across all kinds of topics and not settling on any one as the anchor for a newsletter.

Early this week I was also occupied with getting ready for what is quite a significant trip to Singapore. I landed in Singapore on Wednesday late afternoon. And at this point still had not written the weekly newsletter.

I was starting to feel incredibly guilty, because I write a newsletter every week about 50 weeks of the year. I felt I was being very irresponsible in not writing a newsletter. Not living up to the expectations I had for myself.

So, while I have been trying to focus on writing a newsletter, it simply did not work. I was no closer at 3:00pm on Thursday afternoon than I had been before I left Australia.

Now I have come to my senses. It is okay if I do not write a newsletter this week.

In the scheme of things, it really is not going to make a significant difference. People will forgive me if I do not land in their inbox this week. Some will not even notice.

I was ready to let my team know that this week, there would in fact not be a newsletter.

And in letting go of that responsibility, in releasing the pressure that I had been putting on myself, lo and behold, I have written a newsletter.

Sometimes it is in the letting go that you create an opportunity for yourself. I know this already, and I have just proven it to myself once again.

Is there something you are holding onto too tightly, that if you were to let go of it, it might make all the difference?

I’d love to know your thoughts.
