I’ve been wondering what to write about this week because, let’s be honest, there is so much happening, so much changing, so much developing, and evolving, and it can be overwhelming.

What I am observing is that many leaders are trying to be everything to everyone. They are trying to do everything, be across everything, and that is simply not possible.

The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes.

Tony Blair, Former UK Prime Minister

Today, I am going back to basics with some simple questions aimed at giving you more clarity. To understand where to focus and invest your time and energy.

A few simple questions to ground your leadership:

  • What are the key outcomes required of your leadership role?
  • What are the unique things only you can contribute to? (And it’s not everything.)
  • How much of your time are you focused on developing the capability and accountability of your people so they can step up?
  • How are you managing the balance between what is required in the here and now, with a future focus?

Now reflect:

  1. What are the things you’re doing that you shouldn’t be?
  2. What are the things you aren’t doing that you should be?

What needs to change?

This is about leadership choices. Doing the right things.

Where do you need to narrow your focus, so you focus specifically and only on the important and impactful in your role?

  • What will you do?
  • What will you delegate?
  • What will you delete?
  • Where will you delay the timeframe?

I’d love to know your thoughts.
