During the last 3 weeks I have been travelling and working with leaders in four different countries. And regardless of the country: Singapore; Malaysia; Brunei; Australia, or the industry: from manufacturing fertilizer; to financial services; to telecommunications; to farming, or the size of the organization: from 50 people; to tens of thousands of people, the questions from senior leaders are the same.
- How do I communicate with my people?
- How do I build connection and trust?
- How do I support my people so that they can feel safe and do their best work?
- How do I lead them through change?
- How do I become visible as their leader?
- How do I motivate them?
- How do I give them a level of independence and freedom in their roles, while also ensuring they feel supported?
- How do I build accountability in my people, so they step up, show initiative, and really own the outcomes for their role?
- How do I stop doing so much myself and relying on my own expertise, and spend more of my time leading and building the capability of the people around me?
- How do I develop a robust leadership talent succession pipeline?
- How do I ensure none of us burn out?
- How do I make sure we are all working on the same agenda?
- How do I help people to raise their performance?
- How do I develop myself, so I can develop my people?
While the world is continually changing right now including the massive evolution and uptake of AI and the opportunities this creates; the increasing cyber risk; a world context involving conflict and political agendas; supply chain challenges, to name a few of the complexities facing leaders, what I am hearing is for leaders, the challenge and the opportunity is all about their people.
I define a leader as anyone who takes responsibility for finding the potential in people and processes, and who has the courage to develop that potential.
Brené Brown, research professor, author, and storyteller
CEOs need their leaders to have the capability, the intention, and the confidence to bring out the best in their people.
If you are thinking about some of these questions above, know you are not alone.
The difference between true leaders and those who are simply occupying leadership roles is that leaders will not only consider these questions, they will respond. They will begin to develop a way forward. To take the steps that will make the difference over time.

Proactivity is an essential attribute of leadership in today’s world. Not only contributing in the now, but also creating the future. Creating future relevance. Creating sustainability. Creating options and opportunity. For yourself, for your people, and for your organisation.
I’d love to know your thoughts.
