Still Want to Achieve Big Things This Year? Great Leadership Begins with Self.

As we head into the final quarter of the calendar year it is a great opportunity to reflect. Enough time has passed this year so you can assess progress, and there is still enough time left to make a difference with the things that are important to you.

Following a few sage questions from my coach, I did my own reflection of the year to date.

This year I set out to do some big things. The first was to write and launch my 6th book, Big Leadership, and begin to share the key messages of Big Leadership with the world.

I set some bold goals for the year. Some were commercial, related to revenue and clients, others were about my team, customer experience, health, and wellbeing.

I want to make sure I achieve these goals, which on considered reflection are still important. To do that I need to follow through right to the end of the year. I will not be satisfied with close enough is good enough if I do not give it my best shot. So I am taking the time to reflect on the goals, and the progress, so I know where to focus and apply my energy for the remainder of this year.

That’s me.

But what about you. What did you set out to do this year?

I find that many leaders are challenged to find the balance between leading others and leading self. Yet leading self is an essential part of becoming a leader others choose to follow.

Proactively creating the time and space for self-leadership is key. This does not need to be a lot of time. Though it does need to be intentional.

⮞ How will you reflect on this year?
⮞ How did you go against the dreams and goals you set for yourself?
⮞ How did you give yourself every chance to achieve them?

There is still time to complete, to focus, to make decisions and take action.

You will not always achieve every goal… there are things outside your control at times.

What you do have control of though, is self. How you show up. How often you show up. How you focus. How you set up for success … the achievement of what you deemed important to you.

What makes success is not your genius idea, but the execution and follow-through around it.”

Robin Sharma

So now is the opportunity to reflect, to evaluate, and to course correct if needed, in order to make progress with what is important.

To support your reflection, here are a few thoughts for you:

⮞ Appreciate what you have achieved and where you have made progress.
⮞ Notice who you have become.
⮞ Observe what is working, and perhaps what needs some help or focus.
